Ricky Satomi is an Extension Forester for Sutter, Yuba, Nevada, and Butte Counties, and a California Registered Professional Forester. His education and outreach program focuses on new forest technologies, wood products, workforce training, community hardening, and reforestation planning to support cost-effective public and private landowner management. In addition to GIS training for professional foresters and workshop presentations, he works to improve public understanding of forests through home hardening workshops, disaster recovery meetings, development of extension factsheets and direct landowner support.
His research explores the intersection of forest ecology and management to improve forest resilience to disturbance. He serves as co-chair of the UCANR Forestry Workgroup and chair of the California Society of American Foresters. Previously, Ricky served as forestry advisor for Shasta, Trinity, and Siskiyou counties, policy analyst at UC Richmond Wood Lab, and private forestry consulting. Developing career pathways for future generations of natural resource managers is a passion of his and Ricky co-leads several youth-focused education efforts including the Forestry Institute for Teachers K-12 educator training and California Project Learning Tree program.
